Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to be fit before starting personal training?

This is one of those "If I had a £1 for every time I've heard this..."

Not at all. Many of my clients start because they want help getting back into exercise or building confidence in the gym.

Your programme is always tailored to your current fitness level, experience and any injuries or health considerations. We start where you are and progress at a pace that works for you.

Where are you based?

I’m based at Joe Ralphs Gym in Wakefield, WF1 4LH where I deliver one-to-one personal training sessions in a fully equipped strength and conditioning environment.

It’s a friendly, supportive gym where clients of all experience levels feel comfortable training.

Do I need to be a member of Joe Ralphs Gym to train with you?

No — you do not need to be a gym member to have personal training sessions with me.

Your session includes access to the gym for the duration of our appointment, so you can simply arrive for your session and train without needing to join the gym separately.

All sessions take place at Joe Ralphs Gym in Wakefield, a well-equipped training facility that provides an excellent environment for strength training and fitness coaching.

If you decide you’d like to train at the gym independently outside of our sessions, Joe Ralphs Gym also offers membership options, but this is entirely optional.

What happens in the first session?

What happens in the first session?

Your first session is an initial consultation and training session. During this session we will:

• Discuss your goals
• Review your health and exercise history
• Talk about lifestyle, habits and nutrition
• Assess movement and strength
• Begin training with a tailored workout

This helps me create a plan that is safe, effective and built around you.

Do you offer online coaching?

Yes. Alongside in-person personal training, I also offer online coaching.

Online coaching includes:

• Personalised training programmes delivered through my coaching app
• Nutrition guidance and habit coaching
• Weekly check-ins and progress support
• Ongoing accountability and feedback

This option works well for people who prefer to train independently but still want expert guidance.

Do you help with nutrition?

Yes. Nutrition is a vital part of improving health, body composition and performance.

I provide practical, realistic nutrition guidance to help you build sustainable habits rather than promoting restrictive diets.

This may include:

• Calorie and macro guidance where appropriate
• Meal planning support
• Education around healthy habits and food choices
• Strategies to support energy, recovery and long-term results

Do you specialise in menopause support?

Yes. Supporting women through midlife and menopause is a specialist area of my coaching.

Hormonal changes during this stage of life can affect energy, recovery, sleep, body composition and confidence. With the right training, nutrition and support, you can still build strength and feel your best.

My coaching approach is designed to help you work with your body rather than against it.

Do you only work with women?

While I have a specialist interest in supporting women through midlife and menopause, I work with both men and women.

Many men also experience hormonal and metabolic changes as they get older, including reduced energy levels, increased body fat, lower muscle mass and slower recovery. These changes are often linked to factors such as lifestyle, stress, sleep, nutrition and declining testosterone levels.

Through structured strength training, sensible nutrition and habit-based coaching, I help men improve body composition, rebuild strength, support metabolic health and feel more energised in everyday life.

My coaching always focuses on evidence-based training and realistic lifestyle changes that support long-term health and performance.

How often should I train with a personal trainer?

This depends on your goals, schedule and experience level.

Some clients train with me once per week, while others train two or more sessions per week for more structured support.

During your consultation we’ll decide what level of coaching will work best for you.

What if I’ve never used a gym before?

That’s absolutely fine. Many of my clients start with little or no gym experience.

Part of my job is to help you feel comfortable, confident and capable in the gym environment. I’ll guide you through exercises, equipment and technique so you always feel supported.

How do I get started?

The easiest way to get started is to book an initial consultation session.

We’ll discuss your goals, assess where you are now, and map out a plan to help you move forward.

You can enquire through the website or contact me directly for availability.

What results can I expect?

Results look different for everyone, but many clients experience improvements such as:

• Increased strength and fitness
• Improved body composition
• More energy and better sleep
• Greater confidence in the gym
• Sustainable habits that support long-term health

My focus is always on lasting results that fit real life.
